I undertook the World Rugby level 1 certificate last year whilst overseas and am now living in but have been informed that it's not the same as the RFU level 1. Could someone please advise if this the case. Thanks & regards, Gareth

The WR Level 1 course I believe is an 8 hour course.  The RFU Level 1 Course was 3 days (replaced by the England Rugby Coaching Award - also 3 days).  Only WR Levels 2 and 3 are courses which produce autonomous coaches who can deliver sessions and programmes without supervision.

I believe it also states on the WR Level 1 certificate that whilst it confirms attendance on the course, it does not accredit attendees as a qualified coach.  It won't be recognised on the RFU's Game Management System as a coaching award.

Thanks for the clarification. Could you please advise if the WR level 1 course is the equivalent of any of the RFUs courses i.e. Rugby ready etc. Or is it a case having to go back to square 1? Thanks, Gareth

The Rugby Ready course is 3 hours long.  It doesn't accredit you as a qualified coach either but provides information on the importance of sufficient and appropriate preparation for training and playing whilst reducing the rish of serious injury.

The new England Rugby Coaching Award (ERCA) has replaced both the RFU Level 1 and 2 courses (it is a Level 2 qualification) and is the entry point for coaches working with players of U9 and above and it is tailored to the needs of the players you are coaching (i.e. U9s, U13s, adults etc).  It's a 3 day course and provides those attending with the knowledge, skills and attributes to effectively coach young players and adults.

There are also age grade specific "Kids First" CPD courses (i.e. there is a specific CPD for every age group from U7s through to U14s) which are also 3 hours long.

To become an accredited coach you need to complete the ERCA which is an award course.  If not, Rugby Ready and the relevant age grade specific CPD course would be useful in so much that you would be able to assist qualified coaches.

Thanks Ian, but wouldn't the WR level 1 at the very least be the equivalent of rugby ready? If anything it's a far more detailed course etc.. Essentially I'm just trying to avoid having to go over old ground.

Hi Gareth, there is a coaching equivalency document on our Coaching website.  Please look at this for further information.

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks I've read the equivalency document but unless I'm missing something there is no specific mention with regards to what the world rugby level 1 is equivalent to for RFU England.

Could you please provide a link to where this covered in the document.

Thanks,

Gareth

Whilst the WR Level 1 may be more detailed than Rugby Ready (although it has been updated for September) as its not recognised or recorded on the RFU's system, you will appear as an unqualified coach. The Rugby Ready won't qualify you as a coach either but will reflect on the system and is usually the minimum required by clubs to be involved with coaching. Also you don't have to do Rugby Ready to do the New England Rugby Coaching Award which is change to the previous RFU Level 1 and 2 courses where it was a mandatory pre-requisite.
